SIAM E20 Petrol Contamination Statement:  Industry body SIAM (Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers) recently released a report urging the government to introduce mandatory chloride limits for E20 and E85 fuels. The letter soon went viral for the wrong reasons, and it was believed that the industry body was raising concerns regarding E20 engine damage. SIAM today issued a clarification regarding the previous letter, stating that certain media reports focused on partial excerpts.

SIAM Clarification & Withdrawal Of Previous Letter

The industry body has issued a clarification stating that reports selectively focused on Chloride and Sulphur content in fuel. SIAM also stated that the communication was part of routine, ongoing technical deliberations among various stakeholders, including industry bodies, oil marketing companies (OMCs), automotive manufacturers, and testing agencies. Additionally, the industry body has stated that some numbers quoted in earlier communication require authentication through data collection from various regions across the country, and thus has withdrawn its previous communication.

SIAM Reaffirms Support For E20

While the industry body has issued clarification regarding its previous letter, it has also reaffirmed its support for the government’s ethanol blending program (EBP). In its new communication, the industry body shared that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has instated 3ppm guidelines for chloride/sulphur as a precautionary measure for ethanol blending with petrol. The industry body stated that these standards fully meet the needs of the automobile industry. The brand has further shared that OMCs have initiated checks for water ingress up to 12 times a day in over 87,000 petrol pumps.

E20: The Hot Topic

E20 was made mandatory this year in April, and it has remained a hot topic ever since. From chit-chat among friends to parliamentary discussions, Debate around E20 has reached almost everywhere across the country. The government, in its response to concerns raised in the Rajya Sabha, has said that there are no cases of widespread engine failure or breakdown due to E20 petrol, and several government-backed studies have found a fuel-efficiency drop ranging from 3 to 5 per cent that can be attributed to E20 petrol.
