BCCI To Replace Ajit Agarkar? Rohit Sharma Controversy Puts Chief Selector's Future In Doubt

Ajit Agarkar's future as the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee has reportedly come under serious uncertainty, with fresh reports suggesting the board is considering a change ahead of the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

According to reports, former India batter VVS Laxman has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Agarkar.

Laxman, who currently oversees the Indian team during the Sri Lanka tour and continues to play a key role at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, is believed to be a strong candidate due to his administrative and player development experience.

Agarkar's original contract ended in June 2026. While many expected him to receive a long-term extension through the 2027 ODI World Cup, the BCCI instead granted him only a three-month extension.

The move added speculation that the board was reviewing the performance of the current selection panel before making a long-term decision.

The uncertainty has reportedly intensified following the controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma's ODI future. According to a report, the Agarkar-led selection committee held discussions with Gautam Gambhir-led team management regarding Rohit's role in India's future ODI plans.

It was also reported that the three-match ODI series against England could have been Rohit's final assignment in the format, with selectors considering moving on from the veteran opener.

However neither BCCI, not Rohit Sharma claimed those reports to be true. Apart from the Rohit Sharma saga, Agarkar's short-term contract extension and recent selection-related controversies have reportedly prompted the BCCI to rethink its leadership structure.

With India beginning preparations for the next World Cup cycle, the board is believed to be exploring long-term stability in key cricketing positions.

As of now, the BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding Agarkar's future or the appointment of a new chief selector.

Reports linking VVS Laxman to the role remain speculative, but a final decision is expected in the coming weeks as the board shapes its roadmap towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
