Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are currently struggling in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, and their recent eight-wicket defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT) also put them in the back seat after a dominating 103 run against against Mumbai Indians (MI).
This was Chennai's fifth loss in their eight outings of the tournament, which made them sit at number six in the points table with a negative -0.121 net run rate. However, despite that defeat, the Chennai-based franchise can mathematically seal their berth for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
CSK's Playoff Scenario for IPL 2026
In the IPL, teams usually need around 16 points to secure a place in the playoffs, which generally means winning at least eight matches. With only six league games left, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will most likely need to win at least five of them to stay in the race.
If they lose more matches from here, their chances of qualifying could depend on other teams’ results and net run rate, which always makes things more difficult. Weather could also play a big role, as rain or washed-out matches may affect the points table in the final weeks.
CSK's performance in IPL 2026
CSK’s campaign this season has been far from smooth. They have struggled to find consistency, mixing strong performances with disappointing defeats. CSK failed to get a good start as they lost their first three matches of the tournament. After that, they bounced back with two important wins against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to stay in contention.
However, after that, they suffered a close defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad. After that the Chennai-based franchise bounced back against Mumbai Indians (MI), registering a 103-run win. However, their latest loss against Gujarat Titans (GT) has once again slowed their progress and put more pressure on the team.
Do-or-die situation for CSK
As the tournament moves into the second half, CSK are currently in a situation where they will look to win all of their remaining matches without taking any risk. CSK will now face MI again on May 2 which will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
