DU School of Open Learning expansion: Delhi University is embarking on a major structural transformation following the 1026th meeting of its Academic Council, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh. The most significant shift involves the introduction of one-year postgraduate programs designed specifically for students completing the four-year undergraduate track.
Based on the 'Postgraduate Course Framework 2024,' these programs will be introduced across various departments, including Philosophy, Hindi, English, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Mathematics, and Computer Science. Additionally, courses in Journalism and Mass Communication will also be launched, including the 'Master of Journalism and Mass Communication' program under the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Beyond local curriculum changes, the university is significantly expanding its global and digital footprint. The council gave the green light to the "Semester Away Program," a strategic initiative that enables students to spend a term at international universities without losing academic progress.
Furthermore, the School of Open Learning (SOL) is set to expand its catalog from the 2027–28 session to include multimedia, MBA, and foreign language courses, transitioning into a robust hybrid model of offline and online education.
Delhi University One-Year PG Course Framework 2024:
The following table highlights the key departments and new programs set for introduction under the shortened postgraduate framework.
Department/Faculty | New Program (1-Year) | Academic Goal |
Arts & Humanities | English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Philosophy | Streamlined NEP Alignment |
Sciences | Mathematics, Computer Science | Research-Ready Fast Track |
Social Sciences | Master of Journalism & Mass Comm | Professional Skill Integration |
Education | Two-Year M.Ed. (50 Seats) | Teacher Training Expansion |
Expansion of SOL and Online Programs from 2027–28:
The Academic Council has granted in-principle approval for the introduction of several new programs through the 'School of Open Learning' (SOL) and the 'Centre for Open Learning,' commencing from the 2027–28 academic session. These programs will encompass all three modes of delivery: offline, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), and online. However, the Vice-Chancellor clarified that these programs would be launched only after the necessary academic and infrastructural preparations have been completed.
The proposed programs include undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English, Commerce, Computer Science, and Multimedia. In addition to these, the list features an MBA program, as well as several diploma and certificate courses in foreign languages offered by the Departments of European and Asian Languages.
During the meeting, another key discussion focused on the proposed 'Semester Away Program' under the UGCF-2022 framework. The objective of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to spend one semester at a foreign higher education institution. The credits earned during this period will be counted towards their Delhi University degree, provided they do not overlap with their existing coursework. In this manner, the structural integrity of the degree is preserved while simultaneously incorporating an external academic component.

Key Academic Reforms and New Guidelines:
The Academic Council also addressed several specialized fields and administrative restructurings to enhance research and innovation:
Global Mobility: The 'Semester Away' program allows students to earn foreign credits that count toward their DU degree, provided there is no subject overlap.
Medical Super-Specialties: Approval for DM courses in Pediatric Nephrology (Lady Hardinge) and Medical Genetics (MAMC) with two seats each.
Research Evolution: The 'Research Council' has been renamed the 'Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Council' to focus on practical outcomes.
Journal Standards: Departments must identify their top 20 journals within 30 days to formalize publication standards in non-Scopus fields like Social Sciences.
SOL Expansion: Open and Distance Learning (ODL) will include English, Commerce, and Multimedia programs starting from the 2027–28 session.
Infrastructural Readiness: Vice-Chancellor clarified that new online programs will only launch after complete academic and logistical preparation.
