School Heatwave Precautions: Amid a severe heatwave sweeping across many parts of India, several state governments and school administrations have revised school timings to protect students from extreme temperatures. In many regions, temperatures have crossed the 40°C mark, prompting authorities to introduce precautionary measures such as early morning classes, shorter school hours, and restrictions on outdoor activities.
According to media reports, districts like Prayagraj have implemented new schedules for Classes 1 to 8 from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM starting April 20, 2026. Similar adjustments have been reported in states including Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh. Schools have also been advised to ensure proper drinking water facilities, ventilation in classrooms, and regular water breaks for students.
What changes have been announced in school timings due to the heatwave?
Several states have shifted school schedules to early morning hours to avoid peak afternoon heat. In Prayagraj, for example, primary and middle school classes will run from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM starting April 20. Private schools in Jharkhand have also adopted morning schedules to minimise heat exposure for students.
What safety measures are schools taking during the heatwave?
Schools across affected states have introduced measures such as mandatory water breaks, limiting outdoor activities, and ensuring shaded areas for students. Authorities have also advised schools to maintain proper ventilation in classrooms and closely monitor students for symptoms of dehydration, heat exhaustion, or sunstroke.
