Bengal Polls: With just a few days remaining in the West Bengal Assembly election, all the political parties have intensified their campaigns. As per the experts, along with the local voters, the Hindi-speaking voters are also likely to play a significant role in the upcoming election. The influence of the Hindi-speaking population, especially in the urban regions, has remarkably grown in the past few years. The leading parties, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP, have fielded several Hindi-speaking candidates to lure in these voters.
Out of the total 10.5 crore population of the eastern state, the estimated Hindi-speaking population is approximately 1.40 crore. The Hindi-speaking voters play a key role in several constituencies, including Kolkata's Burrabazar, Behala, and Dum Dum, and the industrial regions of districts like Asansol, Durgapur, Raniganj, Kharagpur, Siliguri, Malda, Howrah, and Hooghly.
Apart from these areas, the urban regions of North and South 24 Parganas and certain parts of North Bengal also have significant numbers of Hindi-speaking voters. As per the experts, there are approximately 50 to 55 assembly seats where Hindi-speaking voters play an integral role.
While the BJP has approached several local businessmen, the ruling party has established a Hindi Academy and has also announced a two-day government holiday for the Chhath festival. Apart from this, both parties have also fielded several Hindi-speaking candidates to lure in the voters.
The BJP has fielded several candidates, including Arjun Singh from Noapara, his son Pawan Singh from Bhatpara, Santosh Pathak from Chowringhee, Rakesh Singh from Kolkata Port, Umesh Rai from North Howrah, Ritesh Tiwari from Kashipur-Belgachia, and Jitendra Tiwari from Pandaveswar.
The Mamata Banerjee-led party has also fielded several candidates such as Kailash Mishra from Bally, Hareram Singh from Jamuria, Bidhan Upadhyay from Barabani, and Vijay Upadhyay from Jorasanko. The voting for the Bengal assembly election will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29, and the results will be announced on May 4.
