IMD Weather Alert: Severe heat waves continue to grip many states across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a gradual increase of 3-5 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, while no significant change is expected over the rest of northwest India. In eastern India, maximum temperatures are likely to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next few days, indicating the continuation of the current heat wave in the region.
Rain is also likely to occur in the northeastern states during this period, which include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is expected in parts of central India, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. Similar weather is also expected in southern India, including Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Kerala.

A heat wave is expected in many areas of Jharkhand and Odisha on April 20. Coastal areas will experience intense heat and humidity. Nights are also expected to be unusually warm in parts of Odisha. In northeastern India, heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
There may be thunderstorms and rain accompanied by lightning in some parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim and Telangana.
Heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Jharkhand, Odisha, and Rajasthan on April 21. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will experience heat and high humidity. Heavy rain is expected again in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
Thunderstorms are possible in some areas of Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Sikkim. Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are at risk of lightning.
On Friday, several cities in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh recorded temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius. The worst heat waves were experienced in Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh and Wardha in Maharashtra, where the mercury reached 45 degrees Celsius.
Ratlam and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh also made the list of the top 10 hottest cities. Ratlam recorded a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, while Umaria recorded 43.8 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, School timings have been changed in 13 districts of Chhattisgarh due to the intense heat.
