The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert regarding continuous high temperatures in Kerala, now Keralam, till Sunday, as 12 districts are being warned about the heat.
Authorities at the State Disaster Management Authority have warned that very high levels of UV (ultraviolet) radiation and extreme humidity can put people at risk of serious illness due to heat exposure, including heatstroke, sunburns, and dehydration.
Temperature forecasts indicate temperatures may reach approximately 40 degrees Celsius in Palakkad, 39 degrees Celsius in Kollam, and 38 degrees Celsius in Kottayam.
As per the IMD, Idukki and Wayanad are the only districts excluded from heat alerts.
To protect themselves from excessive heat, Keralam residents have been advised to:
- Avoid any direct exposure to sunlight between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear loose-fitting clothing made of light-coloured, breathable materials when outdoors
- Use an umbrella, hat, and comfortable footwear
Schools have received additional instructions to:
- Provide sufficient amounts of drinking water for students
- Ensure adequate ventilation in school classrooms
- Avoid holding outdoor assemblies or conducting outdoor activities during extremely hot weather
Individuals at increased risk of developing complications due to excessive heat, including children, the elderly, and those who are pregnant or those with existing health problems, should observe additional precautions to avoid developing complications due to excessive heat.
Because of the hazardous conditions brought on by extreme heat, authorities are also warning that there is a higher-than-typical chance of fire hazards at locations such as markets, buildings, and in areas where garbage is dumped, as well as in forested areas. Therefore, people who live near forests should stay alert.
It has been requested that residents adhere to all guidelines and directions issued by the disaster management authorities and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and seek prompt medical assistance if they exhibit any signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
