In a shocking incident, four members of a family, including two minor daughters, died due to suspected food poisoning after they consumed chicken pulao and watermelon in Mumbai's Pydhonie area, the police said on Monday.
According to a report by Mid-Day, the police officials said that the family that resided in the city's JJ Marg area had hosted a dinner at their residence on April 25. The dinner, wherein chicken pulao was served, was attended by five relatives.
After the dinner, the relatives returned to their homes. Between 1:00 am and 1:30 am, the family reportedly consumed watermelon.
By early morning, between 5:30 am and 6:00 am, all four family members started developing symptoms such as vomiting and loose motion. After initial treatment by a family doctor, they were referred to Sir JJ Hospital as their condition worsened.
Police rules out chicken pulao as cause of food poisoning
The authorities suspect food poisoning from watermelon, as those who consumed only chicken pulao did not report any illness.
The police have identified the deceased as Abdullah (40), his wife Nasrin (35), and their daughters Zainab (13) and Ayesha (16).
The younger daughter, Zainab, died at around 10:15 am during treatment. The father, Abdullah, was the last to succumb at around 10:30 pm that night.
A post-mortem examination of all four bodies has been conducted, and the cause of death will be confirmed once the report is received.
Meanwhile, the police have seized the food samples, including the watermelon, for further examination. "The post-mortem has been done, and opinion is reserved for the histopathological report. The samples of food items and watermelon have been seized for examination. Further probe is going on," an official was quoted by Mid-Day.
A case of accidental death has been filed at JJ Marg police station, the officials said, adding that further investigation is underway.
