Mumbai police have suspended two officials for allegedly creating fake service IDs and pension schemes for 10 non-existential police personnel. Nearly Rs 6.5 crore was credited to their salary accounts between 2019 and 2020. The incident came to light when the department was transitioning to a new salary portal. The suspended officials are identified as Vijaya Ashok Chavan, an office superintendent with the armed police at Marol, and Amol Arunrao Meshram, a senior clerk with the Western Regional Division.
The 10 fake names listed in the First Information Report (FIR) include: Ramdas Bhogle, Sudhakar Kadam, Sarju Yadav, Bhagwat Bhosale, Gunaji Khavkar, Mahadev Haldankar, Rajendra Sonar, Uttam Thorat, Suryakant Patil, and Pandurang Kadam, NDTV reported.
What’s The Case?
The investigators said that clerks at the ministerial level colluded to fabricate attendance registers and records of ghost employees. The officials allegedly added names of outsiders to the payroll. The fake service IDs and Defined Contribution Pension Scheme (DCPS) IDs were used to credit monthly salaries of these 10 fake employees.

The suspicious salary transactions were detected primarily across two timeframes: December 2019 to February 2020 and June to September 2020.
The cops are now investigating the identities of the 10 individuals listed as 'employees' and determining who controlled the bank accounts opened in their names.
Action Taken Against Suspended Employees
The Mumbai police said that the suspended employees are prohibited from undertaking private employment or trade, must submit regular declarations to claim subsistence allowance, and are barred from leaving the Brihanmumbai jurisdiction without prior official permission.
The Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration), Brihanmumbai, ordered the suspension under the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1979. The order had also stated that the action is subject to the preliminary inquiry and court proceedings in the case.
Case Registered Against the Two
