A video circulating online shows an exchange between Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, which sparked laughter in Parliament on Thursday. The moment came when Rahul Gandhi, while speaking, briefly questioned whether Congress MP KC Venugopal’s microphone was functioning properly.

What Exactly Happened In Parliament

During the special session of Parliament, Venugopal questioned the government’s proposal for granting 33 per cent reservation for women in the House, also asking why the measure had not been put into effect in 2024.

His remarks drew an objection from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who intervened to argue that the bill’s merits should not be debated before it was formally taken up for discussion.

As the Lok Sabha Speaker proceeded to clarify the House procedures to Venugopal, Opposition leaders were heard casting doubt on whether his microphone was functioning.

"Mic hi mute tha (The mic was off)," an Opposition leader was heard saying. Soon after, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the microphone issue and said, "No mic.” The Lok Sabha Speaker then replies, "Chalu hai mic chalu hai, aapka hi band hota hai (The mic is on, only yours doesn't work)."

Om Birla’s response reminded Rahul Gandhi’s repetitive allegations that mics are turned off when Opposition leaders raise questions in the House.

The Centre introduced three bills in Parliament on Thursday, including - The Constitution (131 Amendment) Bill, 2026, the one to reserve seats for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, the Delimitation Bill, 2026, to redraw constituency boundaries, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

While the government has appealed to all political parties to back the bills and ensure its passage, several Opposition parties have expressed concerns. The Opposition has clarified that it is not against the women's reservation but objected to the delimitation process, which they believe weakens the representation of the southern and north-eastern states in the Lok Sabha.
