Parliament Monsoon Session: After days of repeated adjournments, the parliament today is likely to hold a special discussion on the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill, 2026. As per sources, Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to participate in the proceedings for the first time in the ongoing monsoon session and is expected to speak on the bill. The opposition is likely to persist on the demands of his statement on the alleged use of excessive police force against the student protesters on July 20.
Rijiju's Meeting With Rahul Gandhi
Earlier on Wednesday, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, in an attempt to break the deadlock in the house, met with the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Rijiju reportedly urged Gandhi to participate in the discussion on the key bills such as FCRA. The two senior leaders discussed the two key bills likely to be introduced in the parliament- FCRA and Delimitation.
However, it remains unclear if Gandhi agreed to participate in the discussion, leading to suspense over the smooth functioning of the house on Thursday. Rijiju is also likely to meet other senior opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav.
FCRA Bill Details
The FCRA bill aims to tighten foreign funding regulations, increase transparency, and strengthen national security. It includes stricter registration, audit, reporting, and asset-related provisions for NGOs and related organizations.
The opposition on Wednesday continued to protest against the absence of Shah and urged him to speak on the allegations of use of force against the students. As per the reports, Rijiju stated that the home minister will participate in the discussion and will also address the issues raised by the opposition.
The centre is reportedly preparing to introduce the FCRA bill in Parliament for discussion on Thursday. This will be Amit Shah's first major speech amid the ongoing parliamentary deadlock.
