Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE: The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, has been approved by both Houses of Parliament. The bill seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the apex court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.
The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day and is scheduled to reconvene tomorrow, Thursday, at 11:00 am. Similarly, the Lok Sabha has also been adjourned for the day following continued protests by the Opposition and will reconvene tomorrow at 11:00 am. Meanwhile, proceedings have resumed in the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier in the day, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju held a meeting with Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in an attempt to break the ongoing deadlock in the House.
Ahead of the commencement of proceedings in the Lok Sabha, Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, held a protest march from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar. The MPs are demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged use of pellet guns and police action against students during a protest at Jantar Mantar. Meanwhile, the government is scheduled to take up key financial legislation for discussion and passage in the Lok Sabha.
Amid the Opposition’s uproar, the Lok Sabha cleared a bill to recognise digital bank records as admissible evidence in courts. Moved by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the bill seeks to replace the colonial-era Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 1891.

Rajya Sabha Passes Bill to Raise Supreme Court Judge Strength from 34 to 38
The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 has been approved by both Houses of Parliament. The bill seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the apex court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India. After the amendment, the number of Supreme Court judges excluding the CJI will rise from 33 to 37.

"Our Biggest Issue Is What They've Done to Parliamentary Democracy: TMC MP Menaka Guruswamy
