Pune Autorickshaw Fare Hike: Autorickshaw travel in Pune district is set to become costlier from September 1 after the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) approved a fresh fare revision. The revised rates will be applicable across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and are expected to benefit nearly 1.5 lakh autorickshaw operators.
For commuters, however, the fare hike means higher travel costs, particularly for those who rely on autorickshaws for first- and last-mile connectivity.
What are the new fare charges?
As per the revised fare structure, passengers will now have to pay a minimum fare of Rs 30 for the first 1.5 km, up from Rs 25. The per-kilometre charge has also been increased from Rs 17 to Rs 20, HT reported.
The latest revision marks the fourth increase in autorickshaw fares since 2021. With the new rates coming into effect, the minimum fare will have risen from Rs 18 in 2021 to Rs 30 from September 1 which is an overall increase of nearly 67 per cent.
Why have auto fares been hiked?
The fare revision follows demands from autorickshaw unions, which have cited rising CNG prices, higher vehicle maintenance costs, expensive spare parts, increasing insurance premiums and inflation as the key factors behind the hike.
CNG prices have soared from around Rs 91 per kg in August 2022 to nearly Rs 96 per kg at present. The revised fares have been determined based on the recommendations of the Khatua Committee, which uses a formula linked to fuel prices and operating costs.
The first fare hike under the current revision cycle was introduced in November 2021, when the minimum fare was increased from Rs 18 to Rs 20 and the per-kilometre charge from Rs 12 to Rs 13 following a sharp increase in CNG prices.
In August 2022, the RTA approved another revision, raising the minimum fare to Rs 23 and the per-kilometre rate to Rs 14. Later that month, the fare structure was revised again, increasing the minimum fare to Rs 25 for the first 1.5 km and Rs 17 for each additional kilometre.
