Uttarakhand Rains: Badrinath Highway Reopens, Landslides Block Key Highways, Yellow Alert Issued For 4 Districts

Clear skies brought much-needed relief to rain-battered Uttarakhand on Tuesday after heavy downpours hit the state a day earlier. Authorities confirmed that traffic along the Badrinath National Highway remains fully operational without major interruptions.IMD has issued a yellow alert for some districts.

Persistent rainfall and landslides have wreaked havoc across several major roads and rural regions, including the Gwaldam Highway. The highway was completely closed to traffic after a massive slide of debris and boulders from a nearby hill in Narayanbagadh blocked the road. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in most districts of the state on Tuesday. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Dehradun, Tehri, Nainital, and Bageshwar districts, predicting heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Routes Closed

Nearly 28 connecting motorways across the district remain closed, disconnecting rural areas from tehsil and district headquarters, and residents are facing significant difficulties in commuting and purchasing daily essentials.

Meanwhile, Jaunsar-Bawar in Vikasnagar has been devastated by the deluge. Incessant rainfall throughout the has reduced many roads to rubble. Heavy debris fell on kilometer three of the Sahiya-Quanu motorway. A passing utility vehicle became trapped in the debris. Despite several attempts to clear the debris, the vehicle still remains stuck at the roadside. 

A woman travelling inside the vehicle was seriously injured, with no alternative, the passerby carried her on his back to the hospital.

Kalsi-Chalrata Road Blocked

The Kalsi-Chakrata road has been blocked due to debris falling from a hill in Jajred, near Vikas Nagar. Long queues of vehicles are forming on both sides of the road, leaving passengers stranded. JCB machines are deployed at the scene to clear the debris and reopen the road.

 A deep pothole has been formed on the Saharanpur Road near Bhandaribagh amid the heavy rainfall. The condition of roads deteriorated in many places due to the rain. The road caved in at two places on Saharanpur Road itself. Meanwhile, local residents have set up signs to alert drivers.
