Why Is Lord Ganesha Called Ekadanta? The Story Behind His Broken Tusk

Lord Ganesha, also known as the Vighnaharta or Vinayaka, is one of the most beloved deities in Hinduism. With the head of an elephant and a compassionate expression, he symbolises wisdom and intelligence.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped all across India for his wisdom, clarity and divine protection. He is believed to remove obstacles and help overcome mental blockages. He is commonly depicted with an elephant head, a pot belly, four arms, and a mouse as his vehicle. What stood out the most in his appearance is his broken tusk, because of which he is also known as Ekadanta.

Mythological Stories Surrounding Lord Ganesha’s Broken Tusk

According to Hindu mythology, there are three stories behind the broken tusk of Lord Ganesha, each carrying a unique spiritual message.

1. The Battle With Lord Parashurama

According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana, Lord Parashurama, who is believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, once visited Mount Kailash to meet Lord Shiva. However, he was stopped by Lord Ganesha, who was guarding the entrance as Lord Shiva was resting.

Angered at being denied, Lord Pashurama started fighting with Lord Ganesha. Although Lord Ganesha was winning the battle, Lord Pashurama hurled his divine axe, which was gifted by Lord Shiva. Lord Ganesha instantly recognised the axe, and instead of protecting himself, he took the blow of the axe to show his respect for Lord Shiva, and this is how his one tusk was broken.

2. Story From Mahabharata

Another well-known legend is associated with the writing of the Mahabharata.

According to it, Maharishi Ved Vyas wanted someone capable of writing the epic as he dedicated it. Lord Ganesha agreed to write the Mahabharata on one condition that Maharishi Ved Vyas should not stop his narration even once. Ved Vyas agreed, but he also set a condition that Lord Ganesha had to understand everything before penning it down.

It is said that while writing the Mahabharata, Lord Ganesha's pen was wearing down. Determined to complete the task, he broke off one of his own tusks and used it to continue writing the Mahabharata without pause.

3. Lord Ganesha And Moon Interaction

Another popular legend is linked to Lord Ganesha's encounter with the Moon God (Chandra).

After attending the feast at Kubera’s palace, Lord Ganesha was returning home on his mouse. On the way, a snake came in their path, scaring the mouse and causing Lord Ganesha to fall. As he fell, his stomach burst open, and the food spilt out. Lord Ganesha calmly gathered the food back into his stomach and tied it with the snake.

Seeing this whole incident, the Moon laughed at him. Angered by this, Lord Ganesha broke his left tusk and hurled it at the Moon before cursing him for his mockery.

Spiritual Significance Behind The Broken Tusk

Lord Ganesha’s broken tusk holds immense spiritual importance. It represents self-sacrifice, humility and unwavering dedication to fulfil the higher purpose. Whether he accepted the blow of Lord Parashurama out of respect for his father or sacrificed his tusk to complete the Mahabharata, both stories highlight the importance of placing duty and dharma above personal comfort.
