Jamshedpur FC's ISL Future Hangs in Balance as AIFF President Appeals To Tata Group

The future of Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) remains uncertain after All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey made a heartfelt appeal to the Tata Group to reconsider its decision to withdraw the club from India's top-flight football competition.

Calling the move "shocking", Chaubey said the AIFF would welcome any discussions with the Tata Group and is willing to accommodate suggestions if it helps keep one of Indian football's most respected institutions in the league.

What Happened With Jamshedpur FC?

Jamshedpur FC's parent company, Tata Steel, recently confirmed that it will withdraw the club from the Indian Super League as part of a long-term strategic shift. According to Tata Steel Vice President (Corporate Services) D.B. Sundara Ramam, the decision is aimed at returning the company to its core philosophy of grassroots football development.

The company has maintained that the move is not linked to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the commercial future of the ISL and has ruled out any reconsideration of its decision.

Despite the withdrawal, Tata Steel has assured that all existing player contracts will be honoured while assisting footballers in securing opportunities with other clubs.

AIFF President Appeals to Tata Group

Speaking to PTI, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey urged the Tata Group to continue its involvement in senior Indian football.

"AIFF would be happy if Tata remains in football, especially in senior top-tier football. If an AIFF request or application can change their mind... the AIFF would like to appeal that for the interest of the players and football, Tata should remain in the senior football league," Chaubey said.

He also stated that the federation remains open to discussions.

"The AIFF welcomes any suggestion and is ready to incorporate the suggestions to ensure the best outcome."

Chaubey Doesn't Believe It Is a Financial Decision

While acknowledging that Tata Steel's board had its reasons, Chaubey dismissed speculation that the withdrawal was purely driven by financial considerations.

He said the decision could not simply be about the reported participation or management fee, adding that the Tata Group has always viewed sports beyond commercial gains.

According to Chaubey, Tata's legacy across multiple industries and its long-standing commitment to Indian sports indicate that the move was the result of broader strategic deliberations rather than financial pressure alone.

Tata Group's Legacy in Indian Football

The AIFF chief praised Tata's decades-long contribution to Indian football, particularly through the Tata Football Academy (TFA), which has produced generations of Indian internationals since its establishment in 1987.

Chaubey, himself a graduate of the academy, credited TFA for shaping his football career and highlighted its role in developing hundreds of professional footballers over the years.

He also noted Tata's wider contribution to Indian sports, including investments in disciplines such as archery, describing the conglomerate as an organisation that has always prioritised sporting development over profit.

A Personal Connection to Tata Football Academy

Reflecting on his playing days, Chaubey recalled training at the Tata Football Academy alongside several future Indian internationals.

He also shared how the academy survived a financial crisis in the early 1990s. According to Chaubey, rumours of the academy's closure were put to rest after TFA's junior teams achieved remarkable success in tournaments in Germany and the Netherlands, attracting attention from Tata's London office, which subsequently extended its support and ensured the academy's continuation.

He added that nearly 275 players have graduated from TFA since its inception, with several going on to represent India at the highest level.

Although Tata Steel has stated that its decision is final, the AIFF's public appeal shows the significance of Jamshedpur FC in Indian football.

With uncertainty continuing over the ISL's future and one of the league's most respected clubs preparing to exit, Chaubey hopes the Tata Group will reconsider its stance in the interest of Indian football and its players.
