Amir Hamza, a founding member of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was shot by unidentified gunmen in Lahore on Thursday. He has been admitted to the hospital, and his condition is said to be critical. It is claimed that Hamza assisted in plotting the 2005 terrorist attack on the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, which was one of Lashkar's first major attacks outside of Kashmir.
The recent attack on Hamza marks the second in less than a year, highlighting a continuous pattern of killings of wanted terrorists in Pakistan over the past few years. Several high-profile terrorists linked to LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahideen have been killed in similar incidents across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) over the last 3 to 4 years. Earlier on March 31, Mohammad Tahir Anwar, the brother of JeM chief Masood Azhar, was found dead under “mysterious” circumstances.
Wanted Terrorists Targetted By 'Unknown Gunmen'
In March 2024, Zia-ur-Rehman, also known as Nadeem, Abu Qatal and Qatal Sindhi, a top LeT commander, was shot dead by unknown attackers. He was wanted by Indian security agencies for his involvement in the Reasi bus attack. Nine pilgrims were killed and 41 injured in the incident that occurred on June 9, 2024.
Earlier in 2023, at least seven terrorists were killed within seven months. Paramjit Singh Panjwar, chief of the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) was among those killed. Despite having security protection, he was shot dead in Lahore while out on a morning walk.
Similarly, Mufti Qaiser Farooq, a close aide of Saeed was killed in Karachi. JeM operative Shahid Latif, linked to the 2016 Pathankot attack, was shot dead inside a mosque in Sialkot’s Daska area on October 10, 2023. After this, in November 2023, Khwaja Shahid, a LeT operative linked to the 2018 Sunjuwan Army camp attack, was found dead in PoK. His body showed signs of torture.
On November 10, 2023, Akram Khan Ghazi, a LeT recruiter, was also shot dead in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by bike-borne attackers. Earlier, in March 2022, Zahoor Mistry, one of the hijackers of Indian Airlines flight IC 814, was killed in Karachi. He was linked to Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.
