United States President Donald Trump on Friday thanked Iran after it announced that the Strait of Hormuz was fully open for passage. However, he also declared that naval blockade on Iran will “remain in full force” until a broader deal with Tehran is reached. His remark comes after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that, in line with a ceasefire linked to the situation in Lebanon, the strait had been declared fully open for all commercial vessels. The ships would be allowed to transit through the strait for the remaining period of the ceasefire.

Iran Declares Strait of Hormuz Fully Open

In a post on X, Araghchi said ships will be allowed to pass through the waterway on the coordinated route already announced by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation. The development follows Trump’s announcement of a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon on Thursday. Araghchi wrote, "In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran."

What Is Lebanon Caveat?

The announcement by Tehran comes as a major sign of easing tensions in the region, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz. However, the opening is limited to the remaining period of the ceasefire. With today's decision, Tehran has clearly indicated that its decision on the Strait of Hormuz depends on the ceasefire situation in Lebanon. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether a second round of talks will take place and whether a final decision on the Strait of Hormuz will be agreed upon by both sides.

After the failure of the US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad, Tehran stated that it would retain strong control over the strait and continue managing or restricting maritime access on its own terms. However, Trump then announced a naval blockade around Iranian ports in the Hormuz, while pressing Tehran to reopen it completely.
