Amid ongoing tensions with the United States, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday made a rare admission, stating that communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was “very difficult at the moment.” However, he emphasised that Mojtaba’s presence continues to provide “a major source of strength” for the nation's leadership.
Iranian Prez Amdits 'Difficult Communication' With Mojtaba
In an interview with the Iranian state media, IRIB, Pezeshkian stated that while direct communication remains difficult, Mojtaba’s role continues to provide support as Iran navigates this highly tense period. “Communicating with Mojtaba Khamenei is very difficult at the moment, but his presence is a significant source of strength for us, allowing us to maintain the process," he said.
Rift Between Mojtaba And Pezeshkian?
His remark is significant as it comes amid reports claiming that Mojtaba has issued a "final ultimatum" to the president, while extending support to Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Ahmad Vahidi for critical decisions on diplomacy and regional conflict. Earlier on Tuesday, Pezeshkian dismissed reports that claimed he had submitted his resignation amid ongoing military escalation with the US.

“If I were going to resign, I would announce it publicly. I will not resign, and I will continue the struggle,” Pezeshkian said, according to a news agency IRNA report. Mojtaba, who took over as Iran’s supreme leader after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, has remained largely absent from public view. He is said to be undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained during the strike that killed his father and other family members.
Despite remaining out of public view for months, Mojtaba continues to issue strict warnings to the United States via written statements. Earlier in July, he warned that Washington would suffer “unforgettable lessons” at the hands of Tehran for repeatedly violating the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries.
“The repeated breach of agreements by the Great Satan vis-a-vis the accord has once again proven to all that the signature of the President of America is now utterly worthless and invalid, and that bullying, hegemonism and savagery are inseparable components of the American creed and doctrine,” the statement attributed to Mojtaba read.
