The conflict between the United States and Iran is closely watched by everyone as the situation remains unresolved. Efforts are underway to secure another round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran ahead of the April 22 ceasefire deadline. Amid all the developments, United States President Donald Trump is preparing for a visit to China in mid-May.

Trump on Wednesday claimed that China is “very happy” with his decision regarding the Strait of Hormuz and has also agreed not to send weapons to Iran. Informing about his upcoming visit, Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping would welcome him warmly during their upcoming meeting and give a “big hug.” He wrote on Truth Social, “President Xi will give me a big, fat, hug when I get there in a few weeks. We are working together smartly, and very well! Doesn’t that beat fighting??? BUT REMEMBER, we are very good at fighting, if we have to - far better than anyone else.”

Which Country Is The Largest Importer Of Oil Passing Through Hormuz?

What's On Agenda?

The US President's upcoming visit to China comes at a crucial time when tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are shaping the global backdrop. It was earlier scheduled to take place from March 31 to April 2; however, it was delayed due to war with Iran. The meeting will be the first visit to Beijing by a US president in nearly 10 years. The main agenda is likely to include trade discussions, economic deals, energy security, the Iran issue and efforts to manage tensions with China.

For China, the visit provides an opportunity to stabilise relations with Washington while also protecting its strategic interests. Beijing is likely to push for fewer trade restrictions, especially in areas like technology, semiconductors, and investment access. China is also expected to talk about global energy flows, which remain disrupted due to blockade on maritime checkpoints like the Strait of Hormuz. Trump in his Wednesday post, has already indicated China’s interest and efforts in keeping the strait open. As China receives the largest share of oil passing through this route, the leaders are expected to discuss this during the meeting.

Will US-China Talks Be A Concern For India?

For India, a meeting between the US and China carries both risk and opportunity. New Delhi also depends heavily on oil passing through Hormuz. Therefore, any disruption directly affects fuel prices, inflation, and economic stability. In this situation, any major deal between Beijing and Washington can reshape global trade and supply chains in ways that may affect India’s position. Also, a concern remains whether any significant announcement from the engagement can reduce India’s strategic advantage in areas like trade, technology, and global partnerships.

It remains to be seen what Xi and Trump will discuss and what would be its implications at global level. Meanwhile, India continues to maintain strong ties with the US and other countries.
