Amid ongoing tensions with Iran, the US Military's warships are stationed in and around key waters to monitor and restrict maritime movement linked to Iranian ports. This also includes blockade around ports in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint. While US President Donald Trump has projected strong military readiness in the region, reports have now come to light suggesting that some service members on deployed ships are not even receiving adequate meals.
Are Sailors Served Poor-Quality Meals?
Pictures accessed by USA Today showed a small portion of shredded meat with a single tortilla, while another showed boiled carrots, a dry meat patty, and processed meat. According to reports, these meals were served recently to sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and Marines on the USS Tripoli (LHA-7). These ships are operating in the Arabian sea as part of the mission to monitor Iran. USS Tripoli has been at sea for more than a month after leaving Japan to join new operations.

Families Raise Concern
Families of US service members have confirmed that sailors and marines on warships are facing food shortages and poor-quality meals. They told the news outlet that their loved ones are “hungry all the time” and not getting enough food during deployment. Dan F, whose daughter is serving on the USS Tripoli, said that troops were rationing food supplies and fresh produce was not available. “We have the strongest military in the world. You shouldn’t be running out of food…The one thing we had over our adversaries was we fed our people,” he said.
A pastor from West Virginia, Karen Erskine-Valentine, said she was worried about the situation after hearing from a community member whose son is serving on the Abraham Lincoln. She said, “The food is tasteless and there’s not nearly enough and they’re hungry all the time. That kind of breaks your heart.”
According to the USA Today report, families have been sending care packages with food, hygiene items, and personal supplies. However, the items have reached them. This is because the US Postal Service has suspended mail service to 27 military ZIP codes following the conflict with Iran, which has affected delivery. A Texas mother said the family has spent about USD 2,000 on care packages for her sailor son, but none have reached him yet.
